I just finished reading Shadow of Tears and wanted you to know how moving and powerful it was for me. My parents were immigrants from Spain when they came to the United States and ended up living in San Leandro, a Spanish-Portuguese community in the San Francisco bay area. My dad only had an eighth grade education and my mother made it to third grade before they were called upon to work to help support the family. Your story brought to back to life my memories of their family loyalty and steadfastness, all the celebratory gatherings and food fests. Why is it that eating together bonds people in so many incalculable ways?
