A Canadian high school dropout, John changed the face of American TV and is recognized as the “Godfather of Reality TV”, having created, co-hosted and written “Real People”, the #1 hit show on NBC for the 3 years he was with it.
He was the first on TV to do film reviews on the news, having been the award winning “Critic-At-Large,” on NBC, LA, for 5 years, and for 10 years, the oft-quoted controversial critic for LA Magazine. Prior to that, he was the original host on “AM LA”, where he won the first of five Emmy® awards, interviewing guests such as Cesar Chavez, and Mohammad Ali, and is the only one on TV to have won Emmy® awards for both News and Entertainment. For years he wrote special materials for Frank Sinatra and politicians. As a stand-up comic, he appeared regularly on “The Dean Martin Show” and in Las Vegas, opening for Robert Goulet, Bobby Dorin and Dionne Warwick, and on two major comedy albums, “It’s tough to be white”, with liner notes by Dick Gregory, and “I Met A Man I Didn’t Like,” with liner notes by Neil Simon!
In 2014, in retirement, he produced the world-wide critically-acclaimed “The Last Word On The Assassination,” featuring the “Garrison Tapes,”, the best documentary ever made on the murder of President Kennedy and the best panel of researchers: Dick Russell, Joan Mellen, and Jim Marrs.
It’d be harder to find another in showbiz who has had the breadth of accomplishment and influence as John.
